How long does a jump starter hold a charge?

NOCO's support FAQ says its Boost packs hold 70% of rated capacity for up to one year, and it recommends charging at least every 4 to 6 months. GOOLOO's listings say every 2 to 3 months for the GP4000 and at least every 3 months for the A3. We would top up any pack every 3 months and after every use.

Why owners still find it flat
The most common complaint in the owner summaries we read was a pack that was dead or would not recharge on the day it was needed. Owner reports on holding a charge were mixed for the GB40, GB20 and GP4000. A few things drain a pack faster than the maker's figure:
- Using it as a power bank for a phone or tablet and not recharging after.
- Running a built-in tire inflator, like the one on the GOOLOO A3, which uses the same battery.
- Heat and cold. NOCO says not to store its Boost packs below -4°F or above 122°F. See hot car storage and cold weather.
- Shipping state. Most packs do not arrive full. Charge it before it goes in the car.
A simple habit
- Charge to full on day one.
- Set a repeating phone reminder for every 3 months. That fits inside both makers' advice.
- Recharge after every jump and every use of the USB or inflator.
- Check the charge lights before a long trip or a cold snap.
If it will not hold a charge
A pack that drops to empty in weeks, or will not charge at all, may be at the end of its life. The warranties on our picks are 1 year for NOCO and 18 months for GOOLOO, per the listings. Contact the maker while you are covered. Do not open the case.
A pack that recharges fast makes this easier. The NOCO Boost GBX75 listing says 1.8 hours on a 60 watt USB-C charger. Caveat: the fast time needs a charger you supply. Compare all five on the picks page.
Safety: stop using any pack that is swollen, hot or leaking, and follow the maker's disposal advice. Never charge a lithium pack outside the temperature range its maker gives.
