Shop for a jump starter by engine liters, not peak amps
Jump starter listings shout a peak amp number: 1000, 3000, 6000. No shared test stands behind that number, so you cannot compare it from brand to brand. Look one line down instead. Most listings also say the largest gas and diesel engine the pack should start, in liters. Match that to your engine, add headroom for cold weather, and you are most of the way there.
What engine rating should you look for?
We multiply your engine size by 1.25 for mild weather, 1.5 for cold and 2.0 for severe cold. This headroom is our rule of thumb, not a maker figure. Engine ratings are the makers' claims from their Amazon listings. Always follow your vehicle manual.
